Statement by U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel on Japan’s Decision on Strategic Petroleum Reserves
We welcome Prime Minister Kishida’s announcement that Japan will release 15 million barrels of oil from its strategic petroleum reserves in coordination with other International Energy Agency members, including the United States. Together we are taking steps to stabilize energy markets, protect consumers from soaring prices, and prevent Putin from weaponizing Russia’s energy resources and to ensure that his assault on Ukraine is a failure.
The United States and Japan will persist in our steadfast support for the Ukrainian people as they defend their country and their democracy in the face of Putin’s unprovoked and vicious war.
