The U.S. and Japan are in lock-step on Russia: any aggression toward Ukraine will not be tolerated and will come with severe costs. Last night, Prime Minister Kishida demonstrated bold and firm leadership to preserve a rules based international order by directly urging President Putin to choose diplomacy over aggression.

As Secretary Blinken said to the U.N. Security Council, we are working not to start a war, but to prevent one. We welcome Japan’s commitment to speak with one voice with our like-minded partners when it comes defending fundamental international norms. Collectively, we will not tolerate Moscow’s efforts to violate another country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, or to change the status quo by force.
