U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel will represent the United States of America at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 6 and the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony on August 9.

“Having the opportunity to once again attend both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony is a sincere honor and personal responsibility,” expressed Ambassador Emanuel. “Recalling my previous visits to Hiroshima, most recently alongside President Biden I was profoundly touched by the enduring spirit of the citizens and the tales of heartache, healing, and hope. It’s essential that we all remember and pay homage to the tragedies of the past to ensure a peaceful future. In a world seeking unity, the linkage between Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park and the Pearl Harbor National Memorial stands as a symbol of reconciliation. Representing the United States in these pivotal moments, I’m more inspired than ever to strengthen our alliance with Japan and realize our shared vision and united pursuit of peace and prosperity.”
