Statement by U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel on the Government of Japan’s Decision to Modify COVID-19 Border Restrictions

On behalf of the entire U.S. Mission to Japan, I would like to commend the Government of Japan for its decision to modify the COVID-19 border restrictions for students while still protecting public health.

This decision will benefit students, who are essential for building long-term people-to-people connections between Japan and the United States. It will also benefit business travelers, who are vital for ensuring that the economic ties between Japan and the United States, as well as other like-minded economic partners, are as strong as they can be.

We at the Embassy will continue to work with our counterparts in the Government of Japan to further combat the COVID-19 pandemic here and abroad, while finding discrete ways to make additional progress on the economic front.
