Ambassador Kennedy’s Statement on Reported DPRK Nuclear Test

Ambassador Caroline Kennedy spoke with Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida at the Foreign Ministry on Jan. 6, 2016, after North Korea’s announcement that they had carried out an underground nuclear test.

AMBASSADOR KENNEDY: Mr. Minister, I am happy to be here this afternoon to express condemnation of the recent announcement. We condemn any violation of the U.N. Security Council resolutions and call again on North Korea to abide by its international obligations and commitments. And we are working closely with the government of Japan in the U.N. to respond to that report.

We stand with Japan and our other allies in solidarity against North Korean provocations, and we will work closely with them in the coming days.
