Celebrating 35 Years of Hawaii-Fukuoka Sister State Ties

In January 2017, Principal Officer Joy Sakurai traveled to Hawaii with a Fukuoka Prefectural delegation led by Fukuoka Governor Ogawa. Thirty-five years ago, the State of Hawaii and Fukuoka Prefecture signed a formal sister-state agreement. This was the first sister-state agreement for Fukuoka Prefecture and was supported by one of the most famous Japanese-Americans with family roots in Fukuoka, former Governor George Ariyoshi.

Since then, our two regions have shared deep cultural, economic, and people-to-people ties. This year’s visit by the Fukuoka delegation was part of an exchange program where Hawaiian legislators also visit Fukuoka. Hawaii Governor David Ige welcomed the Fukuoka delegation in his office in Honolulu.
