The Embassy alerts U.S. citizens residing or traveling along the coast of Japan that the Japan Meteorological Agency has posted a tsunami advisory for low-lying coastal areas of Japan. Tsunami waves were projected to arrive between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. on April 3, 2014 on the Pacific Coast of Japan in the following areas:
- PACIFIC COAST OF HOKKAIDO
- PACIFIC COAST OF TOHOKU
- IBARAKI PREFECTURE
- KUJUKURI AND SOTOBO AREAS, CHIBA PREFECTURE
- IZU AND OGASAWARA
The advisory remains in effect at the time this message was released. Waves are estimated to be up to 1 meter high. More information is available at the Japan Meteorological Agency website:
A tsunami is a series of waves that may continue for hours. Do not assume that after one wave the danger is over. The next wave may be larger than the first one. If a tsunami approaches, be sure to monitor media reports and follow all official instructions.
We will continue to monitor the situation. You can stay safe by consulting Japanese media sources.
