6 MINUTE READ
January 24, 2020

Location: East Asia (China)
Event: Coronavirus Outbreak in China

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring an outbreak of a respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus that was first detected in Wuhan, China.

A number of countries, including the United States, have been actively screening incoming travelers from Wuhan and human infections with 2019-nCoV have been confirmed in Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea. The United States announced its first infection with 2019-nCoV detected in a traveler returning from Wuhan on January 21, 2020.

For information and guidance regarding this disease outbreak, U.S. citizens in Japan are advised to consult the World Health Organization (WHO) and CDC websites. Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is also closely monitoring the situation. The WHO provides country-specific disease outbreak news, including information about Japan.

Actions to Take: CDC recommendations include frequent thorough hand washing and cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing, and wash hands).

Additionally, ensure you have had an influenza immunization this season to minimize the chances of getting flu that may mimic coronavirus infection.

For the most up-to-date information, please consult the CDC website.
