Important Passport Information

Payment Methods & Details

U.S. Mission Japan accepts online fee payments for adult U.S. passport renewal applications. Paying online allows you to mail your application to the U.S. Embassy Tokyo from any prefecture within Japan without the need to appear in person. Click here for information and instructions. We strongly encourage all eligible U.S. citizens to renew using this option.

  • Cash (U.S. Dollars or Japanese Yen) or U.S. Postal Service money order payable to: “U.S. Department of State, PSC 471 Box 1111 FPO, AP 96347”
  • Payment by Credit cards (for payments at Tokyo, Fukuoka, Naha, Osaka, and Sapporo) VISA, Mastercard, Discover, JCB, Diners Club or American Express
  • Please also be prepared to pay with cash in case the credit card verification system is temporarily unavailable
  • NO personal checks / NO Navy Federal Credit Union Cashier’s Checks are accepted.

Adult Renewal (DS-82)

Damaged/Lost

Renewing Emergency Passports & Change Data (DS-5504)

If your emergency passport was issued less than one year ago from the time you submit this application, OR the change/correction is within one year after issuance, you may apply by mail for your full-validity passport (for all applicants).

  1. Make sure you sign the DS-5504 form. If applying for children under 16, a parent should sign the application form on behalf of the child.
  2. For corrections: Evidence of correct biographic information (original + 1 photocopy)* e.g. Original birth certificate, previous passport. For name changes: Legal documentation of name change (original + 1 photocopy)*e.g. Original marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order.

Important Information

What not to bring to your appointment

  1. Visitors are not allowed to bring cell phones, laptops, tablets, and similar electronic devices onto the premises. Visitors carrying unauthorized objects will not be granted entry.
  2. To facilitate and speed up your entry into the compound we recommend you bring no large bags such as suitcases, backpacks, and packages.
  3. Baby food and/or essential medications (in plastic containers only, NO glass) should be brought to the attention of the guards.
  4. Once you enter the screening area, be prepared to remove all metallic items, together with your coat/jacket, belt, handbag/rucksack/briefcase, etc.
