Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Tropical Cyclone Chantu

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo cautions U.S. citizens that Typhoon Chantu (Summer Tropical Storm 7) is expected to pass about 80 miles east of Kanagawa Prefecture late in the evening of Tuesday, August 16, and proceed northward along the east coast of Japan. In conjunction with this storm, the Japan Meteorological Agency may issue a High Wave and Thunderstorm advisory for all of northern Japan. Those in the Kanagawa and Tokyo regions can expect high winds of up to 45 knots (51 mph) gusting to 55 knots (63 mph), with the possibility of dangerous storm tides, heavy rainfall, and possible flooding. The storm may disrupt public transportation in affected areas.

The Japan Meteorological Service’s Typhoon tracking information may be found in English at this webpage. Information about Chantu is also available from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Note that the current Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness (TCCOR) for U.S. military installations on Okinawa may be found online here.

Kadena Airbase also has tropical cyclone forecast information at this site.

All U.S. citizens living in or traveling to the area should monitor local weather reports, follow directions from local officials, and take other appropriate actions as needed.
