Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Tropical Cyclone Talim (No. 18)

September 12, 2017

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo cautions U.S. citizens that Typhoon Talim (Typhoon Number 18) is expected to make landfall in Okinawa Prefecture near the Sakishima islands, which include Miyako, Ishigaki, Iriomote and Yonaguni Islands, during the early morning of September 13, 2017, and then move toward Taiwan and mainland China.  The storm may affect neighboring islands including Kumejima Island, and Okinawa Island.  In conjunction with this storm, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a High Wave advisory for affected regions of Okinawa Prefecture.  Expect extremely high winds, dangerous storm tides, heavy rainfall, and possible flooding to occur.

The Japan Meteorological Service’s Typhoon tracking information may be found in English at this webpage:  http://www.jma.go.jp/en/typh/.  Information about Tropical Cyclone Talim (No. 18) is also available from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center at https://metoc.ndbc.noaa.gov/jtwc.

Note that the current Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness (TCCOR) for U.S. military installations on Okinawa may be found here: https://shogunweather.com/tccor/.

Kadena Airbase also has tropical cyclone forecast information at https://shogunweather.com/tropicalcycloneforecast/.

All U.S. citizens living in or traveling to the area should monitor local weather reports, follow directions from local officials, and take other appropriate actions as needed.
