Many U.S. citizens and residents in Japan recently received an Economic Impact Payment (EIP) check. The Economic Impact Payment program is administered by the IRS. The IRS maintains an International Taxpayer Service Call Center that can be reached at +1-267-941-1000 or by fax at +1-681-247-3101. They are available from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM U.S. Eastern time.

The U.S. Embassy cannot cash checks and most Japanese banks will not accept them. We cannot change these guidelines. Please check with your bank in Japan for guidance.
The Internal Revenue Service asks residents of Japan who have erroneously received these checks to return them via mail to the address listed below. If returning a check, please mark the check as “Void.” The U.S. Embassy cannot verify eligibility.

If you have a U.S. bank account, you should contact your own bank for instructions. Some have reported success depositing their checks through their bank’s mobile banking app.
