Preventing International Parental Child Abduction

If you have immediate concerns about international parental child abduction and wish to speak to someone, call the Prevention Team at U.S. Department of State’s Office of Children’s Issues at 1-888-407-4747 or +1 202-501-444 and ask to speak to a Prevention Officer. Alternatively, they can be reached by email at PreventAbduction1@state.gov. Please click here for more information on how to prevent child abduction, including enrollment in the Children’s Passport Issuance Alert Program (CPIAP).

The Children’s Passport Issuance Alert Program (CPIAP) allows the Department of State’s Office of Children’s Issues to contact the requesting parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of any pending passport application. For information on the program and instructions on how to enroll your child, please visit https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/International-Parental-Child-Abduction/prevention/passport-issuance-alert-program.html.

If your child holds Japanese citizenship and is eligible for a Japanese passport, you may wish to consider contacting the nearest Japanese Embassy/Consulate in the U.S. or prefectural passport office in Japan to express your concern on the issuance of the child’s passport.  For more information, please visit the Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website https://www.mofa.go.jp/announce/info/passport.html.
