U.S. and Japan
Statement by U.S. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel on Additional Measures Taken by Japan to Hold Russia Accountable

We applaud Prime Minister Kishida’s government for banning the export of approximately 300 goods to Russia and Belarus, including semiconductors and communications equipment, and for stripping Russia of its most favored nation trade status in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Japan’s actions demonstrate its steadfast commitment to stand in unity with the United States, our allies and partners in Europe and around the world, and the Ukrainian people.

We also welcome Japan’s decision to sanction 17 additional Russians who are not only complicit in Putin’s vicious war against Ukraine, but are profiting from this war of choice. Together with Japan and our other allies and partners, we will collectively continue to hold Putin and his cronies accountable for the assault on Ukraine and further isolate Russia financially.
