CONTINUED RESTRICTIONS FOR TRAVEL TO JAPAN
Travelers arriving from the United States – including all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories – are now required to quarantine in a Japanese government-designated location for the first three or six days (depending on point of origin)of their 14-day quarantine. The areas in the United States from which travelers to Japan must comply with the mandatory three-day or six-day quarantine at the Government of Japan’s designated facilities are as indicated below. CHANGES MAY OCCUR WITH LITTLE OR NO NOTICE.
Regardless of the international point of origin, all travelers entering Japan remain subject to a 14-day quarantine upon arrival and are prohibited from using public transportation, including domestic flights, taxis, and rail services. The previous reduced quarantine period of 10 days for vaccinated travelers no longer applies under any circumstances.
All authorized travelers inbound to Japan must receive a negative PCR test within 72 hours of flight departure. These tests must be presented in the prescribed format and must comply with very strict requirements.For details, please see the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Failure to complete the prescribed form as required by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare may result in denied entry to Japan. Travelers arriving without proof of pre-travel COVID-19 testing completed no more than 72 hours in advance of the departure of their international flight may be denied boarding at their point of origin or entry into Japan.
The U.S. Embassy is unable to advocate or intervene on behalf of U.S. citizen travelers denied boarding at their point of origin or denied entryinto Japan.
Under Japan’s recently strengthened COVID-19 prevention rules, vaccination status has no impact on an individual’s eligibility to travel to Japan, and Japan’s quarantine restrictions apply regardless of vaccination status. The Government of Japan has also capped international arrivals to 3,500 per day. These limits may adversely impact commercial aviation schedules resulting in potential flight delays or cancelations.

TOKYO’S COVID-19 OMICRON VARIANT CALL CENTER
Japan has opened a call center for inquiries about the COVID-19 Omicron variant. The call center is open every day from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM. English language support is available by calling 0570-550-571.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government continues to operate the COVID-related Multilingual Consultation Navi Servicescall center, but it will not be available during the New Year holiday period. During this period, people needing consultations related to a possible COVID-19 illness should contact the Tokyo Fever Consultation Center at 03-5320-4592. People needing consultation services related to COVID-19 vaccines may contact the Tokyo Metropolitan Government COVID-19 Vaccine Side Effects Consultation Center at 03-6258-5802.
