Appointment System for American Citizen Services

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo has resumed some routine services. To schedule an appointment for a date on or after October 1, 2020, please click here. If you require an appointment prior to October 1, 2020, please email TokyoPPT@state.gov.

The U.S. Consulate General, Naha (Okinawa) has suspended all routine appointments for passports and notarial services. To schedule an appointment, please email the Consulate General at NahaACS@state.gov.

For Tokyo

Please note: Individuals coming to Embassy Tokyo for consular services are now required to bring and wear protective masks. You will not be allowed entry without a mask.

Due to strict social distancing guidance, we are unable to allow anyone into our waiting room other than the applicants who are required to be present at the time of your appointment.  Please refrain from bringing your friends or spouse to the Embassy, if they do not need to be present for your application.

Appointments

Please arrive no more than 15 minutes before or after your scheduled appointment time.

  • For appointments from October 1, 2020, click here to make or cancel an appointment for passport/report of birth/notary (Tokyo). Please bring a printout of the “Appointment Details” screen when coming to the Embassy. Confirmation email will NOT be sent after you make an appointment.
  • If you are unable to print out your appointment details, please write down your appointment password. You will need your appointment password to change or cancel your appointment.
  • For applicants who used the electronic application for the Consular Report of Birth, please allow 5 working days between payment submission and interview appointment time.

Social Security
  • To apply for a social security card, please DO NOT make an appointment here. Please contact the Federal Benefits Unit at FBU.Tokyo@ssa.gov. It is no longer possible to apply for a social security card at the same time as a Consular Report of Birth Abroad.

For Naha

    • To request an appointment for an emergency passport or emergency notarial service please email NahaACS@state.gov.
      Note: Applicants who have made an appointment through the on-line appointment system prior to August 17, 2020 will be accepted as scheduled.

    • To apply for a social security card, please contact the Federal Benefits Unit at FBU.Tokyo@ssa.gov. Please note that it is no longer possible to apply for a social security card at the same time as a Consular Report of Birth Abroad. All inquiries regarding social security card, federal benefits falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Benefits Unit.

For Osaka-Kobe

Non-emergency services are by appointment only.

Each family member seeking a service related to passports or birth registration should make an individual appointment. At the time you receive your appointment confirmation page to print, you also will be offered the option to make a separate appointment for another individual.

For Fukuoka

  • To make or cancel an appointment for passports/reports of birth/notary (Fukuoka), please click here.
  • Please make one appointment per family, even if you have multiple passport applications or reports of birth abroad.
  • If one of the services you require is a birth report, your appointment should be for “Report the birth abroad of a child.” If you create your appointment under a different category, we will not be able to accept your birth report application during your scheduled appointment.
  • Please provide a phone number and email address that you normally use. We may need to contact you regarding your appointment.
  • Military families are encouraged to consult your base Legal Office for the completeness of your application package prior to visiting the consulate.

For Nagoya

The U.S. Consulate in Nagoya no longer provides American Citizen Services. American citizens are advised to consult the website of the U.S. Consulate General in Osaka.
