What is Administrative Processing?
Some visa applications require further administrative processing, which takes additional time after the visa applicant’s interview by a Consular Officer. Applicants are advised of this requirement when they apply. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visa, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.
How can I check my status?
- If your visa interview was at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and at the time of the interview and you received a form stating that your application requires administrative processing, you may check your status here.
Note: As of August 2018, the chart for checking the administrative processing has been removed. If your passport was not kept at the Embassy, we will notify you by email once the administrative processing for your case is completed. If you have not heard from the Embassy within 60 days following your interview, you may contact us via this online inquiry form.
- If your interview was in Fukuoka, Sapporo or Naha, please contact our call center.
- If your visa interview was at the U.S. Consulate General in Osaka-Kobe, please click here.To use the website, you will need to select “Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV)” from the drop-down menu, select “Japan, Osaka” as the location, and then enter your “Confirmation Number,” which you received when creating your DS-160.
