Location: Okinawa Prefecture (July 20-23, 2021)
Tropical Storm In-Fa (expected strengthening to typhoon today) is expected to bring high winds, dangerous storm tides, heavy rainfall, and possible flooding to areas of Okinawa Prefecture beginning July 20, 2021 and reaching its closest point to the main island of Okinawa Prefecture at approximately 8:00AM JST on July 21. In-Fa is predicted to continue westward over Miyako and Ishigaki islands July 22 and 23. The U.S. Consulate General Naha will be closed July 21, 2021 due to In-Fa.
If you live in or are traveling to storm-prone areas, prepare by organizing a kit in a waterproof container that includes a supply of bottled water, non-perishable food items, medications, and vital documents. Emergency shelters often provide only very basic resources and may have limited medical and food supplies. U.S. citizens throughout Japan should pay careful attention to trusted local media and follow the instructions of local authorities in preparing for these storms.
If moving to a shelter, please ensure that you continue to follow instructions regarding social distancing and other mitigation efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
All U.S. citizens living in or traveling to the area should monitor local weather reports, follow directions from local officials and take other appropriate actions as needed.
The Japan Meteorological Service’s typhoon tracking information may be found in English online here. Information is also available from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
